Why I Love This Recipe
There’s nothing better than a steakhouse-style dinner at home when you want to celebrate someone you love. This simple but elevated meal feels fancy without being fussy — juicy steaks, baked potatoes with all the fixings, and a crisp Caesar salad. It’s the perfect way to create a warm, memorable birthday night without the crowds or the wait at a restaurant!
Ingredients
For the Steaks:
4 filet mignon, ribeye, or New York strip steaks (about 1 to 1½ inches thick)
Salt and pepper, to taste
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons butter
2 cloves garlic, smashed
2 sprigs fresh rosemary or thyme (optional)
For the Baked Potatoes:
4 large russet potatoes
Olive oil
Kosher salt
Toppings: butter, sour cream, shredded cheese, chopped chives, bacon bits (optional)
For the Caesar Salad:
1 head romaine lettuce, chopped
1/3 cup Caesar dressing (store-bought or homemade)
1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
Croutons
Instructions
Prepare the Baked Potatoes:
Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C).
Scrub potatoes clean and pat dry. Rub each potato with olive oil and sprinkle with kosher salt.
Place directly on the oven rack (with a baking sheet on a lower rack to catch drips) and bake for 45–50 minutes, until tender when pierced with a fork.
Set up a toppings station with butter, sour cream, cheese, chives, and bacon bits if desired.
Prepare the Caesar Salad:
In a large bowl, toss chopped romaine with Caesar dressing until evenly coated.
Top with Parmesan cheese and croutons.
Serve immediately for best crunch!
Cook the Steaks:
Pat the steaks dry and season generously with salt and pepper.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet (preferably cast iron) over medium-high heat.
Add steaks and sear for 3–4 minutes on each side for medium-rare, adjusting time based on thickness and preference.
During the last minute of cooking, add butter, smashed garlic, and rosemary or thyme to the pan. Spoon the melted butter over the steaks as they finish.
Remove steaks from the pan and let them rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
Dietary Quick Tip: To make this dinner gluten- and dairy-free, use plant-based butter for the steaks and potatoes, swap in dairy-free sour cream and cheese, and opt for a gluten-free and dairy-free Caesar dressing.
Steak Tips: Let steaks come to room temperature for 30 minutes before cooking for the most even sear. Don’t skip the resting time after cooking — it locks in all the juices!
Baked Potato Shortcut: You can microwave potatoes for about 5 minutes first to speed up the baking process if you’re short on time.
Caesar Dressing Tip: If using store-bought dressing, look for one in the refrigerated section for the freshest flavor.
